Overview
Reducing our impact on the environment and pioneering sustainable ways to serve our customers has been a priority at the Domtar Distribution Group for years. We are proud to be an industry leader in environmentally responsible practices, products and people.
Certified commitment
At the Domtar Distribution Group, protecting the natural environment is our shared mission.
In 2003, we were the first paper merchant to achieve Forest Stewardship Council® (FSC) Chain of Custody (CoC) Certification. We have since added Sustainable Forestry Initiative® (SFI) Certification and Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification Schemes (PEFC) Certification to achieve Tri-Certification.
Our Tri-Certification provides you with assurance that fiber for our certified products has been sourced from forests managed according to leading global sustainability standards.
Virgin vs. recycled
We are committed to balancing our customers’ supply needs with the need to minimize impact on our natural resources. While much emphasis in the marketplace has been placed on using recycled materials, there simply is not enough recycled fiber to meet society’s paper needs; two thirds must come from forests. That’s why we focus on sustainable sources of virgin fiber, as well as recycled fiber. Virgin fiber harvested using recognized third-party certified sustainable forestry practices is as environmentally sound as the use of recycled fiber.
Green practices
Throughout our organization, we continuously seek out innovative ways to “go green.” From company-wide recycling to energy-saving lights. We even have a wind-powered location. We are continuously striving to enhance our sustainability to improve the balance among the economic, environmental and social implications of our operations.
Responsible parent
Our parent company, Domtar, was the first paper manufacturer to support sustainable forestry practices and FSC and SFI certification. The company has played an active role in numerous environmental initiatives in both Canada and the U.S. In addition, Domtar has demonstrated its commitment to reducing greenhouse gases, increasing use of renewable energy to approximately 79% of total energy use by 2007.
